Middleweight is a great weight for me. Took 4 months of consistent strength and conditioning with a well balanced diet to shed that weight. This is definitely where I belong.

Just finished my wrestling camps held in Carlsbad. Another successful year! Brought in a good friend of mine this year to run the camp so that I could focus on my training. I am fortunate enough to have incredible trainers in Coach Billy and Coach Abel who came to me everyday, as well as some great training partners.

This week I am finishing my last hard week before tapering off for fight week. Been going to LA to train at Blackhouse, and down to Carlsbad to get my hand and foot work. Am feeling great going in to my last 10 days. I have been waiting almost 6 months to get back in the cage! For those of you who saw my last fight…it has been a long time coming! Not in it to avenge my last fight though. There will be another place and time for that. My goal for this fight is to compete like I do in the gym. By doing this, I am comfortable with the outcome everytime.

On Saturday May 16th in San Francisco over 90,000 people came to commemorate the cultures, food, dances, artifacts, clothing, and the people of the Asian Community. This event is known as the biggest outdoor Asian American event in the United States. Major streets and intersections were blocked off. The air was filled with the aroma of  barbeque, everywhere you turned there were booths setup showing off their different cultural items for sale. Books were being offered to educate about different Asian cultures. At 11:15am I was able to speak about the recent happenings. I also enjoyed the boxing ring with Muay Thai and mixed martial arts exhibitions. As I stood around the ring I took pictures with friends and fans and was interviewed by Myx. Myx is the music channel of ABS-CBN and is currently one of the most popular music channels in the Philippines. It is also a part of Studio 23’s program line-up. I was privileged to meet Joey Guila, a well-known Filipino comedian was there to show his support. I remember watching him perform stand-up comedy at another Filipino festival.

After spending about 3 hours at the festival, I headed out  back down to So Cal for Jason Lambert’s fight. When I arrived into Ontario, Jason was in good spirits and was ready to go. It was a long night of fights. There were 12 fights on the card with performances in between. The event started at 6pm, Jason didn’t get into the cage till 11:45pm. It was great fight. Lots of action from every aspect of MMA. Tons of scrambles, combinations of punches and kicks, and ground and pound action. Jason’s great at throwing his combinations. The only difference in the fight was the takedowns. Matyshenko had 3 takedowns to Jason’s 1 takedown. Although Jason nearly ended the fight, Matyshenko was able to weather the storm and get through it. Now its back to the gym to train our weaknesses and make them our strengths. Champions aren’t measured by how many wins they have, but how many times they pick themselves back up after loss!

I’ll be in San Francisco for the Asian Street Celebration this weekend on Saturday, May 16th from 11am-2pm. I’m excited to be back in the Bay! There is no place like home. I’m also looking forward to catching up with family & friends. It’s been awhile. Will be training over at Fairtex with my man Ganyao. Hope to see you there!

Heading back down to So Cal on Saturday afternoon to corner my good friend Jason Lambert on the first show of Call to Arms in Ontario, CA. We’ve been training together for a few months now. Excited to watch him dominate this weekend!

My family and I had been out to Phoenix for about a week earlier in the month, and after the 2nd surgery my wife took the 2 little girls back out to Phoenix for 5 days, while I stayed here with the older kids. I got to play full time dad, helping with school, cooking meals, carpooling to activities, and fitting in my training in between. I can honestly say it was a great family experience for me. I was given the opportunity to see what it is like for my wife when I am away training. Put things into perspective.

On the training homefront, I just recently added a missing aspect of my MMA training. I found a place called The Cutting Edge run by Todd Norman, who is one of the top Nike SPARQ trainers in the nation. I can already feel a vast improvement in my core and just my overall strength. I am very excited for the opportunity to train at The Cutting Edge.

Been training at Joker’s every day working on all disciplines, but strongly focusing on putting together my standup with my wrestling. Don’t want to forget what i am best at.

I have my next fight scheduled. It should be announced here shortly. I can not tell you how excited I am to step back in the cage. I have begun my diet down to 185. I am looking to walk around consistently between 200-205. Doing well so far. It is a fine line here because I can’t put on too much muscle or my journey down will be much more difficult.

Flew back home on Thursday. Off to Phoenix for the week with my family. The US National Wrestling Team will be there getting ready for the US Nationals held in Vegas. Plan to sharpen my wrestling skills.

Physically I am doing fine. I have some dizzyness which is normal after a concussion, but overall I’m doing well. I will take the positive out of this experience, so I can tell you that this was probably the best thing that could have happened to me early in my MMA career.

In other news, my next fight will be at 185 pound weight class. I will begin the journey down in the next few weeks. Thanks to all of you who continue to support me and to those who kept me in their thoughts and prayers.
